DEATH OF BISHOP CHARLES PERRY

The death is announced of the Right Rev. Charles Perry, D.D., formerly Bishop of Melbourne, youngest son of the late Mr. John Perry, of Moor Hall, Harlow and uncle of the late Mr. J. W. Perry Watlington, at the age of 84 years.

From Harrow School Bishop Perry passed to Trinity College, Cambridge, where, before he was 21, he graduated as Senior Wrangler, First Smith's Prizeman, and First Class in the Classical Tripos. He was shortly afterwards elected a fellow of his college.

Having held a parochial cure in Cambridge for several years, he was in 1847 appointed first Bishop of Melbourne, only resigning his see in 1876.

Two years later he was appointed Prelate of the Order of St. Michael and St. George, and at the same time he was given a canonry in Llandaff Cathedral.

The remains of the deceased were interred in the family vault at Harlow on Saturday. The body was removed from the residence of the deceased in Avenue Road, St. John's Wood, and was conveyed to Harlow by rail by a mid-day train.

A full choral service was held in the parish church, and the hymns, "Now the labourer's task" and "O God, our help" were sung. The clergy officiating were the Venerable Archdeacon Cooper, of Westmoreland, the Venerable Archdeacon of Essex, the Rev. Henry Farrow, vicar of Harlow, and the Rev. A. H. Parnell, curate.
